The Winnica

“Winnica” is translated to vineyard which is difficult to say in English. While in Poland, most people I met thought I was referring to Venice but it means vineyards. Poland is new to wine, it was only in 2005 that Poland winemakers were allowed to return to their trade, and now every year new vineyards are opening. There are now dedicated wine tours now operating every summer, five days of just wine tasting. It would seem the Poles new love of wine has created a new passion for them and believe me they know what passion is. This year alone 50 new vineyards have been registered. Every summer the vineyards set up an area on their properties with outdoor seating and umbrellas for visitors who are eager to learn more about this new industry. The proud owners give them a tour of the wines, and you get the the opportunity to ask questions, usually family owner they farm the land which is very suited to growing grapes, then sit back and enjoy the wine tastings, this happens between May and August each year, during the other months its business as usual getting ready for bottling. I would like to mention one we met.

The Plochocki Winnica in the Sandomierz region. A beautiful part of Poland, set against the medieval town of Sandomierz, here there a more and more boutique vineyards opening. Barbara Plochocki took us on a tour of her gorgeous vineyard. Bottling 17000 bottles of wine annually, a range of red, white and orange wines are produced here. Her wines are now award-wining and there were many to choose from. They also offer an overnight stay at the chalet (pictured). This charming boutique winery is ideal to truly experience this new and exciting world of wine in Poland,. Their enthusiasm and charm, not to mention the warmth the Poles have with visitors, so sit back and enjoy Polish hospitality and spend the evening talking and tasting wines.😊
